What is ping and what's a good value?
Understand ping (latency) with simple examples and learn which values are good for gaming, calls and everyday use.
Ping is the time a request takes to go from your device to a server and back. It's measured in milliseconds (ms) — 1000 ms is one second.
A comparison
Speed is the width of the road; ping is the distance to the destination. A wider road doesn't make the trip shorter. That's why upgrading your plan doesn't always lower ping.
Reference values
Up to 20 ms: excellent. 20–50 ms: great for almost everything. 50–100 ms: acceptable, with slight delay in fast games. Above 150 ms: noticeable delay in conversations.
What increases ping
Distance to the server, congested Wi-Fi, mobile networks, someone doing a heavy upload on the same network and poor routes between providers.
